Marge Marken joined our club approximately 6 months ago to become fitter
and to socialize. She found out about our club from a member who she
met at Spa 81. Hearing we were friendly, she decided to check us out.
Marge quickly found out that we lived up to our reputation and proclaims
that we are “great people.” Her goal is to complete the
Leading Ladies Half-Marathon this coming August. Let’s get to know
Marge.
Marge was raised in Bridgewater, a small Eastern South Dakota town. Memories
include her father serving in the military during WWII until she was three years
old. She graduated from the high school in Bridgewater and after spending some
time in Sioux Falls, made the move to Rapid City in 1967. Part of the reason
why Marge came to the Black Hills was because her brother was here attending
the School of Mines.
This led to her landing a job at the School of Mines. Marge worked there in various
jobs for almost 40 years culminating in a position as the budget manager. She
first retired in 2006 but they missed her so much, she agreed to come back. She
retired again for the final time (really) on June 21, 2007 and hasn’t looked
back.
Just because she is retired, doesn’t mean that Marge has slowed down. She
has many hobbies to include biking, golf, reading, gardening, and sewing. She
is her church’s treasurer and volunteers at the community theater. Marge
also gives 9 hours a week to the Black Hills Children’s Home helping the
children improve their speech. Her daughter, Kimberly, and 5-year old granddaughter,
Alex, live in Phoenix, Arizona. She spent Christmas there this year and had a
great time. A proud Grandmother, she’ll gladly show you a picture of Alex.
Welcome to the club, Marge! We look forward to socializing with you and assisting
with your fitness goals. Club members, if you haven’t met her yet, make
a point of saying hello on Wednesday nights. She is there most weeks and is easy
to pick out with her warm and constant smile.
